In the Motown
heyday it was honey-sweet vocals, relentless grooves,
precise phrasing and soul that drove the world crazy. It
was about songs that swept you off your feet with their
infectious rhythms and intelligent, concise lyrics.
Smokey Robinson sang about loves irrationality in
"Youve Really Got A Hold On Me" while Marvin Gaye
built a musical milestone with "Aint No Mountain
High Enough". Countless female groups such as The
Supremes and The Marvelettes, dazzled the audience with
their distinct style and sophistication.
Motown music emerged from the thriving creativity of the
1960s. Berry Gordy founded "Tamla Motown", a small US
record company that generated seemingly endless hits and
raised the bar for artistic excellence and outstanding
performance. The companys name came from the 1950s
movie Tammy (Tamla) and the slang for Detroit, the home
of the US motor industry, Motor-town, or Motown. Tamla
Motown was soon shortened to simply "Motown".
Mo-Tunes
is a new, totally live music show that is dedicated to
recreating the entertainment and glamour of Motown,
combined with a hard groove edge. Too often this style of
music is presented in a wimpy cabaret styled backing -
not this time!!! bringing the brilliance of 1960s Motown
music into 2006. Formed in 2000, the band groups seven
Melbournebased musicians; Alisa Porteous, Katie-Jane
Kesans and Fiona Graham are the glamorous vocalists. Gina
Woods (The Mojos) on keyboards, bassist Stuart
Prendergast, guitarist Damon Goulas and Robert B. Dillon
on drums, present this energetic, live show.
Mo-Tunes tour
constantly, bringing their show to audiences around
Australia and the world. They performed at the Australian
premier of film documentary "Standing In The Shadows Of
Motown" in 2003. Mo-Tunes seasonally perform and tour
with 1950s Rhythm and Blues group "The Drifters".
Gordy was intent on selling the music of young Black
America to White America, and reasoned that he could do
this with sophistication, glamour and infectiously catchy
songs performed by the best talent in Detroit. These are
elements Mo-Tunes embody. The band covers the essential
hits and explores some unreleased gems previously buried
in the Motown vaults.
Fronted by three
stunning feature vocalists - Melanie Jones, Tracie
Lanigan and Chloe Wilson; joined by an outstanding live
band which consists of musicians of the calibre of Gina
Woods (The Mojos), Shaun Cannon, Damon Goulas and Robert
Dillon, Mo-Tunes delivers the authentic 60s
Motown/Northern Soul sound. Recently the Mo-Tunes have
toured with The Drifters, delivering a unique 60s
experience to delighted audiences.
Hear and experience superb renditions of the great Motown
hits including: Stop In The Name Of Love, Baby Love, The
Way You Do The Things You Do, My Guy, Come See About Me,
Dancing In The Street, Mr Postman, Tears of a Clown,
Reflections Of and many more.
Apart from some obvious covers, the band also explores
some of the unreleased gems from the Motown vaults.
Mo-Tunes is a celebration to an era when pop music was
perfectly formed, glamorous and fun!!
